The Essence of Marcel special edition

A precise, architectural outline that frames a softer interior

MARCEL Armchair is named after Marcel Breuer (1902–1981), the Hungarian-born architect and designer, one of the key figures of modernism and the Bauhaus in Europe and the United States.

design concept and inspiration

Forms reduced to their essentials, without losing the sense of a space to be lived in

Formally trained at the Bauhaus, Breuer pioneered the use of tubular steel in furniture, alongside a body of work that explored structure, proportion and clarity of line across interiors and architecture. His designs balanced strict geometry with a surprising sense of comfort, reducing forms to their essentials while still making spaces to be lived in.

MARCEL translates this principle – structure as the form itself – into an upholstered armchair. A continuous outer frame wraps seat and arms in a single gesture, while a slim brass bar crosses the open front: structural and drawn at once, echoing Breuer’s balance of rational construction and human scale.

Discover MARCEL

MARCEL Armchair is built around a continuous outer frame that wraps the seat and arms in a single U-shaped gesture. This rectilinear envelope, in smooth leather, gives the piece a monolithic, gallery-like character. Suspended within the volume, a cushioned seat appears to float, while a slim brass bar crosses the open front, structural and drawn at once.
